New Dim Mak "Labor of Love" Employees Thank you to Brian Roettinger for layout, art direction for covers and print, Dan Sena and Alex Benowitz for press transcriptions, Sam Velde for retail marketing, and Tristin Laughter- the Dim Mak Press Publicist from here on out! So excited about 2003.

Paradise Island, Dance Disaster Movement, Gravy Train show at Bottom of the Hill was awesome! It was worth the ten hours of driving Brian and I did. Mikey was supposed to come but something happened to his phone because he never answered it that day.

Dim Mak "I'm Like a Stepping Razor Don't You Watch My Size I'm Dangerous" 2003 Posters designed by Nathan of Gossip/Die Monitr Batss and silkscreened by Seripop will be available for mailorder January 21, 2003. 300 have been made. Pink, yellow and black ink on white paper- 18x24. I'm giving some out to people that have been good to us and the rest will be for sale for $4ppd. You can pre-order yours now. Just so you know, when I put up on the site that the Pretty Girls Make Graves posters me and Mikey made a while back, we sold out of em in a matter of 2 months. And still after over 6 months I still get asked if we have posters left. Posters go fast. Don't miss your chance if you want one.

The Kills
The Kills finished off their UK dates with Primal Scream in December. Soon after finished off their full length set for release through Rough Trade. I've heard most of the songs when I was on tour with them in the US and they are more sassy, snarling, rough, and dirty... It's so fucking good! "Fuck the People" will be the sung in the streets after every show. This full length will be the BEST RELEASE OF 2003. Hands down! They will be touring Japan at the end of February and soon after US dates in support of their full length. Keep checking the tour dates, they'll be up as soon as I get em.

Paradise Island
So Dim Mak will be doing the Paradise Island 7" and LP/CD in the next coming months. The songs, all of them range from folk coal mining traditional American 1920's ukulele-esque sound to Suicide to Fred Frith noisey guitar ambience... Paradise Island is Jenny from Erase Errata's alter ego. The 7" will be coming out in April and the LP/CD soon after. Amazing amazing amazing amazing stuff!

Dance Disaster Movement
They just got back from their first west coast tour by themselves. In July they hit the road with The Kills and went south to Houston, this time they went up to Canada. Ended up playing shows with Secret Mommy (Andy from Red Light Sting's band), Hint Hint and Cobra High in Seattle, Paradise Island and Gravy Train in San Fran., Headphone in Olympia. So I guess the tour kicked ass from what they said other than the weather almost fucked some of their dates up since Matt's truck seems to be on its last legs. Next tour will be to go down to the SXSW showcase March 14th. If you can help out with dates around that time in Phoenix, El Paso, Houston, Tucson, San Diego, or anywhere in between Long Beach and Austin, email ddm@dimmak.com. Their LP/CD will be out in a week. It looks great. I designed a West Coast tour CD limited to 30. If you got one your lucky. Maybe it will sell on Ebay for $160 like the Pretty Girls Make Graves Boxsets that Mikey, Brian and I made awhile back. If you want to preorder the LP or CD you can do it now. I've already got a shit load of preorders for vinyl. All mailorder gets colored vinyl if we have any. I'm pretty sure white vinyl was made but I'll have to check.

The Gossip
The Gossip just came back from a bunch of tours, dates with Har Mar Superstar, and dates alone. They just finished recording their full length on KRS. And the record on Dim Mak is a live LP and CD. The LP will come with an 18x24 B/W poster. Their will be a limited 300 on pink vinyl that come with a button set exclusive to the 300 records as well. They will ONLY be available from The Gossip on tour and from Dim Mak mailorder. These will go fast, I guarantee it! Do Not Pre-order until March. I'll post when preorders will be available. The recording is raw and unbelievable. This record kicks ass!

Die Monitr Batss
As I was telling someone before, Die Monitr Batss wrote one of the best songs I've ever heard and its on this record. I'm so fucking psyched to release these songs. The 7" will come out the first release date of April and the CD discography will come out the second release date. Think Teenage Jesus and the Jerks or Mars without China Burg. The band rules. DMB fucking rule! The record will be a split release with H3.

Panthers
I was just out in New York visiting family over the break and I got a rough mix of the record from Jay while I was out there hanging with Jared Leno- aka Steve Hahnel (a cross between a young Jay Leno and Jared Leto). He's decided to change his website to poormansjaredleno.com not poormansjaredleto.com. Ask him about it. Anyways, the record is fucking awesome. It sounds really different from Are You Down? But still the same Panthers signature angular guitars, loud crashy drums and bass, vocals are political and gritty, fucking awesome. This record is much more raw and loud than I thought it would come out! Production sounds big but not overdone. It's awesome. Steve Revitte (produced Liars, Yeah Yeah Yeahs) did an amazing job to say the least! 12"/CD slated to be released in April.

Mr. David Viner
In the Act Records, run by Jason Stollsteimer of The Von Bondies, and Dim Mak will gang up to push Mr. David Viner in the US.Here's the mysterious story of Mr. David Viner. He toured with The Von Bondies and The Kills just a few months ago. While on tour, he constantly played his acoustic guitar when he wasn't selling Von Bondies records. During the middle of the tour, he started opening up the shows with a 20 minute set of his instrumentalist blues, incredible traditional New Orleans style blues. The past month he was on tour doing merch for Soledad Brothers in Europe and ended up playing second guitar with them throughout the second half of the tour. He just recorded an EP that is set to come out in May. Hotel from The Kills plays drums, Johnny Walker of Soledad Brothers played harmonica and second guitar, and Jason from The Von Bondies will be doing some back up vocals. The truest blues musician from London, UK.

From Monument To Masses
So I'm sitting here writing this update constantly repeating the mp3 that Francis, drummer from From Monument To Masses, emailed me today of a new song that they just recorded to come out on the Dim Mak 2003 Sampler "Stepping Razor" and later on their full length set to release sometime before summer. Not sure the date yet. But fuck is it amazing. This is leaps and bounds beyond their last full length. And their debut full length blew me away and still does. Still in the same fashion, with cleverly fused samples from political and radical thinkers discussing very apparent and modern day politics and agenda. So they've been chilling out from shows and in February they will be recording with Tim Green of the Fucking Champs, Nation of Ulysses for their sophomore release that is more than anticipated at this point. I'll put up mp3s once they let me.

Bluebird
Bluebird are set to tour the world this year. They just got back from their US tour in support for Hot Blood and now they are going up the coast with The Apes from DC. After that they are confirmed on a few dates in London and a possible Peel Session appearance. Japan and Australia are being discussed with labels interested now and all tour dates will be posted as I get them. From what Sam has said, they already have another full length of material that will hopefully come out by the end of the year. Fast fucking writers! And we are in the middle of discussing the re-appearance and release of The Two on CD with all their 7" songs they have. Different artwork. The LP of Hot Blood is coming out but they will be limited to 300 and the covers will be silkscreened by Bluebird and myself. More details later.... For now go see em at the Shakedown in LA if you live out here.

Pretty Girls Make Graves
Their UK dates with Your Enemies Friends was a success again. Their shows with Les Savy Fav and Hint Hint around the Northwest were great too. Now they are in Seattle for the next few months finishing their next full length album. The songs that I have heard so far are unbelievable, totally fucking anthemic. Serious ballads. Their shit's always firm. Nathan and Aska are having a baby, but that's old news to most people. Congratulations to them! And they are set to tour down to SXSW with Hint Hint and Cobra High.... Tour dates will be posted. The Pretty Girls Make Graves poster I'm making will be done soon. When it's done I'll post it on the site on how you can get one.

Tokyo Sex Destruction
Spain's answer to the MC5. I swear to God. Comparable. Political and radical as fuck, referencing and championing the Black Power Movement led by the Panthers and revolutionary discourse bleeds through their rock'n roll ballads. They plan on touring the US,hopefully with Soledad Brothers, as they both rocked together in Spain on SB's Europe tour, this will be after the record is released in the States, in March. I'm going to be putting up MP3's as soon as I can.

Soledad Brothers
They just got back from their Europe tour and are finishing up some songs they are recording. I just got the test pressings of the "Live" LP/CD in today and they kick ass in true Soledad Brothers form. Very raw blues all recorded at the infamous Gold Dollar in Detroit. You can hear Carrie from the Von Bondies heckling them if you listen close. The record comes out in Feb. Rolling Stones to Robert Johnson fans will love this. Unreleased songs and some of their hits on one record. 300 on white vinyl, get it through mailorder.

Pearlene
New band from Cincinatti, OH, Covington, KY and Detroit, MI formed from Brian Olive and Johnny Walker of Soledad Brothers, Ruben Glaser responsible for the making the Soledad Brothers sophomore release sound the way it should have, and bassist mastermind Jesse. So these four have gotten together and recorded 11 songs to be released sometime in March. They have also written enough songs for a full length on Sympathy due around the same time. Amazingly written songs that are somewhere between Captain Beefheart and John Lee Hooker. These song are timeless and will outlive even my life. Tour plans are still yet undecided. Will be posting if they play out anytime soon.

The Phantom Pregnancies
Yes! It's finally coming out, after all these years. Even Marc McClean of Sick Lipstick's been waiting for five years for this fucking thing to happen. I'm so honored to have released this record. It's 27 songs in 30 minutes, not 40 minutes,,,, sorry Stuart... February 18, 2003. Get your pink vinyl through mailorder limited to 300. It's Karen from Huggy Bear and Delia from Mambo Taxi, Sean from Watt Tyler, Stuart Dog Pigeon for Shit's Sake. The cult band from the UK playing five minute sets in their pajamas, doing a split record with Beck, I mean come on, this is some serious shit!

Huggy Bear Tribute
Yeah, we are still taking submissions. Send at your own will. But make reservations to be considered by February the latest. We've gotten 20 confirmed bands so far so its definitely close to being filled up. This is a split release with Wakusei in the UK. He'll be puttin out this record in the UK.

New updates to the site and new ones to come
Store: will feature a section on shirts, buttons, posters, non Dim Mak shit, including old indie/hardcore records that will simultaneously be on Ebay....
Hearts and Minds section: featuring all Dim Mak celebrated authors, theorists, activists, people from Huey P. Newton, bell hooks, Judith Butler, Angela Davis, Gloria Anzaldua, Third World Gay Liberation Front, Audre Lorde, June Jordan, and more... The Hearts and Minds section, I can't fucking wait til Ron and I get that up.... A little history on the Hearts and Minds. The seventh release back in 1998 was the Planes Mistaken For Stars 7". I started thinking of ideas of how to incorporate a political aspect to the label that would create more awareness on critical thinkers that have inspired me either through their writings, action, and/or dialogue. I graduated from UCSB in 2000 with a Women Studies and Soc. Degrees, with a primary focus on theory and issues that affect people of color in America. I got the name Hearts and Minds for the series after watching a film called Hearts and Minds about the Vietnam War in a politically oriented meeting that I went to 1997, spring sophomore year in college. Hearts and Minds, the film, showed the devastating side of the war, the bloodshed, the mass murders, the idiocy, sadness, and tyranny of how capitalism was the primary concern of the war for America, to hold claim on land that was fresh with resources, much like what is going on today. Fuck the war! Stop the war! In any case, that movie has stuck with me, as with the name, so I called the series Hearts and Minds. The series is to provide awareness on these critical thinkers that have shaped my understandings on identity, race, class, gender, sexuality, religion and non religion, culture, privilege. The first person who I celebrated was Huey P. Newton of the Black Panther Party. And from Huey it went to Bruce Lee, the Black Panther Party, Third World Gay Liberation, Eldridge Cleaver, Gloria Anzaldua, Che Guevara, Leonard Peltier, Angela Davis, June Jordan, Audre Lorde, Big Mountain Resistance, bell hooks, Fred Hampton, Judith Butler. It will continue on. For the Hearts and Minds section- there will be a page dedicated to each of these critical thinkers and future ones that will be celebrated with the insert or poster that I made and links to find out more information on them. I can't wait for this to come up.
