A RECENT INTERVIEW WITH STEVE AOKI FROM SONIK MAGAZINE OUT OF GREECE
1.Hello. How are you? What’s your schedule for today?
Today I work all day, check out this new office space we might move into, listen to the new neon blonde master (already have it on repeat all morning), organize and clean up the office (it gets messy quick), then go dj my night called fucking awesome at this bar in hollywood called beauty bar.
2.How do you feel with the recent Bloc Party success in the US?
We've been promoting this band heavily since early 2004. When I heard them everything came together for Dim Mak. Bands like Bloc Party complete the heart to my label. They re-validate all the reasons why I do it in the first place. Their success is well deserved and all self made. We definitely budgeted this record and band far higher than some of our other artists but major money was NOT pumped in to push this band. As you know Dim Mak is a growing indie so we don't have that kind of capitol. We believed in this band so much and pushed them with so much confidence and heart and it grew on its own. The thing is, good music is good music, and if you believe in a band that hasn't reached the surface yet and fucking put your footwork and your heart in it, it will reach the masses. It will prevail far past all the bands that major money pays hundreds of thousands for and most of the time FAIL. That growth is priceless. Bloc Party deserves everything that has happened so far and this is barely the start. There is so much more coming. Working with their management, Simon White, who became a very good friend to me, and the publicist Press Here, who rocked the EP to the biggest magazines that ate it up, AAM for radio promotion and their initial belief, all came together in a big way. And most importantly after people saw them live it really gave people enough reason to go bananas for them.
3.How did it come to be a co-release with Vice?
Vice are good friends of ours. Dim Mak has been doing a lot of other fun events/business together. But most importantly Suroosh, one of the owners, is a very close friend. Working together came together so naturally and it fit better than a glove. I'm happy to work with them and there is still much more work to be done, the album just came out last week and sold well. In any case, Vice are hard workers, bad ass, fucking smart as hell, and really get their artists out there.
4.When did you start Dim Mak and why? Were you playing in any bands as well?
1996 I was 18. Fucking hungry for good music, putting on shows in my living room that we called the Pickle Patch in Santa barbara (we put on over 400 shows there-- the carpet was left filthy), wrote columns and reviews for HeartattaCk. Still hungry for music, I started Dim Mak with a seven inch and put out friends bands that toured through Santa barbara. Yes, and I also was in bands myself that are no longer now. I sang in a band called This Machine Kills for three years that became my life. We released a bunch of 7"s and did an album on Ebullition. It was fucking hardcore, politically so. All the lyrics were honestly directed to other Asians and people of color so I'm not sure how far or how felt it was embraced. But I loved that band. I also played guitar in Esperanza, a thrash band with lots of LA folks, The Fire Next Time, that Dim Mak actually released.
5.Seems like 2004 has been really good for the label…
Every year I'm doing the label I feel it's been great for us cuz we are still around!!! Labels are tough to run financially, it feels like a black hole sometimes but then you hear something like Neon Blonde or Bloc Party or M.I.A. Or Gossip or Mahjongg or DDM and to be totally fair all the other bands on Dim Mak & Cold Crush that move the fuck out of me. This year is going to be the best year though!! I say that every year.
6.What’s next for 2005? Future releases?
Oohhh so many good releases, here goes:
Jan birthed
Pony Up "S/t" CD
Gossip/Tracy and the Plastics "Real Damage" EP
Bloc Party "Tulips" Single
Feb birthed
Squeak E. Clean Presents a split record between Baldhead Slick (aka Guru)
And 2 Mex single
The Peels "S/t" CD
A Gun Called Tension "S/t" LP/CD
March birthed
Bloc Party "Silent Alarm" CD
Mahjongg "Raydongcong 2005" LP/CD
April will birth
Bloc Party "Silent Alarm" 3xLP
May will birth
DDM "Snow on the TV" LP/Cdep
In the summer/fall: Blood Brothers EP, Neon Blonde EP, Neon Blonde LP/CD, Lion Fever LP/CD, Bloc Party Remix LP/CD, Primal Scream "Evil Heat" 3xLP, From Monument To Masses Remix CD, Grafiti 12"... And more.. Secret gems...
7.What’s ‘Dim Mak Massive’?
The hip hop urban side to Dim Mak. We released two hiphop groups on Dim Mak: Automato back in late 2003 and just recently Libretto late last year and I felt that with the new additions to Dim Mak being hip hop, especially the Baldhead Slick (GUru) 2 Mex 12"... For fuck's sake its GURU the legend. Ive been listening to him since I was 14. I wanted to make sure that Dim Mak had a good family of urban hip hop based artists where they feel like there is a community of their sound. We got more DMM releases coming. As for now the Squeak E. Clean 12" is the first. Squeak E. Clean, is also not only a very good buddy but one of the most versatile producers I've ever met - he's doing the new Yeah Yeah yeah's album, last year Ben Lee's album, new Pharcyde - Edy Crahp, and so much more.. You will definitely be hearing more about him soon.
8.Also, what’s Cold Crush and Ten Fingers? What do you have to do with these labels? Do you work close with them?
Cold Crush officially is a partnership between Derek Fudesco (who also plays bass in Pretty Girls Make Graves) and myself. We started the label because Derek wanted to do a label and I told him I'd start Cold Crush with him because we shared the same vision, same ideas, and of course best buddies. Ten Fingers is Ben Lee's record label. We started working together because Ben and I also shared the same vision and he brought Pony Up! To Dim Mak and we came up with the idea of doing it together. Ten Fingers is all Ben Lee and for Pony Up! Its a menage a trois love affair, figuratively speaking.
9.How’s the L.A. scene? Any good new bands from there?
LA scene is so BIG.. There are so many bands and so many different pockets of music going on here it's hard to stay central to one sound. Just too much going on. I cant even find any LA bands other than the ones that I have and had- Lion Fever and DDM (long beach) and Dios Malos. But there are definitely some bands that should not go unnoticed from LA - off the top of my head because I know ill forget some - Har Mar Superstar, Autolux, Icarus Line, Busdriver, Brother Reade, and more...
10.When did you start dj-ing and what’s next?
A little over 2 years ago. I learned how to beat match from just doing live gigs. My friend Cali DeWitt used to work at this club called 3 of Clubs and called me one day and asked me to dj one night and I was like, wow.. I ve never thought about djing ever and he got me to do it and I fucking loved it. I blame everything on him! Djing is a win win situation cuz its fun, I play dance party music and dance too, and I get paid to actually help subsidize the label as well.
11.What’s happening on Tuesdays at Cinespace? Who opened this venue and do
> you feel a part of it from the very beginning?
It has been a partnership between Franki Chan, my dj partner in LA, Jason Stewart who runs the club on a day to day basis, and myself. We started it together a little over a year ago and since then its been totally what this city needed. Good bands, house party-like dancing going on all night, and FREE FUCKING ALCOHOL for the first hour - we are lucky cuz we get sponsors up the ass for some of our nights. It's been fun and I love doing that night.
12.What’s on your playlist?
M.I.A. Like 24 -7, like when I'm chewing gum , I'm chewing gum to one of her beats, like when I'm sleeping she's rocking around dancing around in my head, when I'm djing - I play too many of her songs, one night I played 7 of her songs, or shit more than just one night, like many nights, and every chance I get to say her name I get excited again... The world has been waiting for an artist like MIA, everyone has needed MIA - it's like that movie or old fable of that sad city that can't seem to get it together until this daughter has been born in the smallest part of the city and she grows up and doesn't even realize her strength, until she's like I'm going to do this myself cuz im so fucking sick of all this mundane same ol' shit. Then someone hears it and then they go what the fuck!!!! That's me! I heard it and I was like what the fuck!! Wha' wha' the fuck!!! Then she became the queen of the city because the city gave her the keys because the city has been so mundane and so tired and so run down by the same ol' shit.
13.Thanks for the interview!
